There a many acne myths that can have you trying to treat your acne problem ineffectively. In fact, some of the myths that many of us still follow can make matters worse.
One of the most common acne myths is the desire to dry out the skin. We believe that oily skin is more likely to break out than dry skin. This is only partially true. Controlling excessive oil can help immensely but drying out the skin will not only make things worse right now but will also have consequences for later in life.
Drying out the skin today will not only lead to additional break outs from the irritation but it can also contribute to premature wrinkling. The skin needs moisture in order to be healthy. Using excessively hot water, over scrubbing, and using harsh cleansers dry out the skin and your whole plan backfires before it ever really gets started.
The sun is not your friend if you have acne. This common myth comes from the idea that the reddening of the skin from the sun helps to cover up the redness that often accompanies acne. It also tends to tighten and over dry the skin. Thus, you just end up with more irritation rather than the soft, healthy skin you're looking for.
More scrubbing is not better. Just like any other type of blistered irritation, you need to give each pimple time to heal on its own in between each washing. Trying to scrub off your acne is likely to do little more than peel it open, cause bleeding, and lead to scarring.
Acne is caused by a combination of excessive bacteria and clogged hair follicles. By trying to control the bacteria, you can actually strip away too much bacteria. This will then lead to an overproduction of the very same bacteria you are trying to diligently wash away. Stick to two gentle washings per day and avoid scrubbing in excess.
Food products do not necessarily cause oily skin or acne. In fact, many people with a high intake of fried foods have no acne problems. While this food is not good for you, it's unlikely to be causing acne beyond preventing you from eating healthier foods which will contribute to healthier skin.
Acne myths are difficult to ignore simply because we want so badly to find something that will work long term and immediately. Just because something momentarily feels better doesn't mean that you have found a reasonable and healthy solution. The proper use of products is essential in getting rid of your acne.
