Sudden onset acne can be extremely disconcerting. Often there seems to be no discernable cause for the problem nor can you fathom why after a period of clear skin you are suddenly breaking out. In most cases, sudden onset acne is aggressive, promoting numerous blemish appearances in one day.
Yet, despite the sudden appearance and the lack of immediate explanation for the sudden onset acne, there is usually a single root cause that is attributing to the problem. The human body is a highly complex system of smaller systems that are interconnected and interdependent. If one system goes haywire, it's not uncommon for other systems to respond accordingly.
One of the most common causes of acne that erupts out of nowhere and is slow to heal or reduce in frequency despite treatment attempts (over the counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) is medication. Some medications that are prescribed for everything from pain to constipation to allergies trigger a response within the body which leads to a sudden and rather severe case of acne.
Because this phenomenon doesn't occur within a large section of the population, you're not likely to find it listed as a side effect or as a potential reason offered by most physicians. The idea has been chronically dismissed despite the increasing number of cases that have appeared in the last three to five years.
Obviously, one way to discover if the medication you're taking is the root cause of the acne, you'd have to stop taking it if it is safe to do so. Many people find that within 24 hours the acne starts to improve, it looks less dramatic, and new blemishes stop appearing. In some cases, the opposite can be seen within 24 hours of starting the medication.
Sudden onset acne caused by medication is most likely going to target the face, arms, and back. During the time that you are battling the aggressive outbreak, you are likely to notice and increase in pain and swelling around each individual blemish. This is why the transformation from one day to another when stopping the medication provides such drastic evidence.
The human body may be mysterious despite our science. Yet for those that have no other explanation, understanding the root cause can help significantly with the course of treatment. Antibiotics can be helpful when trying to combat sudden onset acne. Often you can start to see improvement in just a day or two if the right antibiotic is prescribed.
